BF4... being a BF3 premie

Sounds like they're basically back to what they were in BFBC2, which, to my way of thinking, was a fantastic design for the class. They were too "passive spotter + sniper" in BF3. In BFBC2 you could play aggressive recon, move with your team, keep tossing motion trackers ahead, slap C4 on vehicles and walls and stuff, etc. On the whole, once they finally ironed out all the wrinkles in balance, I thought BFBC2 was pretty much the best balanced multiplayer FPS I've played, so it's nice to hear they'er working the classes back in that direction.
I think pretty much everyone would agree with you on this. Recon was nerfed so heavily in BF3 that they were only effective at range which lead to the camping behavior we're all used to now.

Of course it's only helped somewhat, much of the camping behavior is still very much alive in BF4, at least in the BETA so far.

You, you were moaning, you always moan about something; it's part of your charm :)

I don't know about the heavier hardware requirement because the game is in BETA and still has optimization left to be done. My framerates may be a little lower than B2K so if you could play that expansion then you can probably handle BF4 (at least so far).

Recon has been bumped in many areas especially now that they can carry C4 and have better motion tracking gear as well as range finders. Their also able to use a much larger variety of weaponry than ever before making them much more effective on the Battlefield.

The one thing I was worried about though is Recon being more effective overall at camping which doesn't seem to be an issue so far. As it is, you can access many areas that Recon can so they tend to camp a bit less, at least so far, but I guess that can always change.

You really need to find a few hours to try out the BETA. Between 4 - 6 hours is what you'll need to spend ingame (at least) to get an idea of what you're in for in BF4 IMHO.

I expect it will be until people start using recon aggressively and/or see others use it that way and say "Waaaaaiit a second. You can score BIG points that way." I loved playing aggressive recon in BFBC2, and found them to be an integral part of the team. At range, they could dislodge dug in enemies, but you could still use them in closer range with a Thompson or G3A3 or whathaveyou. I frequently used them to just drop buildings on objectives using C4, and used the motion trackers to sneak by enemies. It was great.

Anyway, here's hoping the rest of the game has seen such improvements and doesn't suffer from "This is the best gun" syndrome right out of the box.

The only glaring issues I see right now is that I still don't see the balance I was expecting. I think Support is largely useless as all they really get is Suppression on the big guns but other than that, there stock weaponry is pretty ineffective unless playing MLG BIPODPRO.

Assault still seems to be the best class overall but a medic can't do sh1t with armor so we need Engy's still and they seem pretty much the same with the exception of lock on RPG's.

Assault also can't med train like before so it will be interesting to see how it works in competitive because now reviving isn't as viable as it was in BF3.

If I were to choose on a 5 Player Squad for pubbing I'd have 2 Assault, 1 Engy, 1 Support, and 1 Recon.

Hmm. That sounds like the kind of underlying problem that will remain in the game. Kinda like how people kept hoping Recon in BF3 would be modified as it ultimately was for BF4, and which they never did. I wouldn't expect the class roles to change, nor for the classes to get equipment/abilities that fundamentally change how they can be played. They'll tweak the edges, but that's it.

Subtle changes will happen over time, but the basic roles will remain what they are, I expect.

Support is not great, but with Carbines or DMRs can do more than bipodding; they also get C4 in the full game, and the XM25 is suprisingly fun to use.

Assault has the problem that the revive window is so short in the beta, but it will be longer in the full game.

The beta is prob. a bad balance indicator due to the missing gadgets.

I reformatted two nights ago because I got this crazy idea to try out Windows 8. I've heard it runs good and can be customized but what a sorry assed looking OS. Needless to say, I threw the W7 disc into the drive.

Tried playing after the format, using the same 320.49 NVidia drivers, and kept crashing due to direct x issues. Couldn't even get into game. Before the format, had no problems. PC had been active for 2 years since the last format. Like WTF?

Quickly tried the beta's, even though I know they giving lots of people issues. Jumped into a server for a few min - seems they work good for me, and believe it or not I think I get better frames than with the 320's.

I'll know more later when I pwn some n00bs.

whatever this new patch did made the jittering go away i hardly noticed it at all now there is stil the odd blip but other then that the beta seems to be better with it
