Fragtard DayZ server - restarts?

How often is the fragtard server set to restart?

From the general consensus of everyone thats been playing it seems to be too often, when the server restarts it takes a good 3-5 minutes to come back up, if you try to join before its back up it wipes your character.

Just checked the config files, appears to be set to restart once every 4 hours. I think the frequent restarts are crashes, not scheduled restarts.

4 hours is a pretty reasonable figure for Server Restarts so most will only experience it once per gaming session.

If it's more frequent than that then it's crashing which Quick will have to look into.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention Pepsi.

Nope, I'm 100% certain these are scheduled restarts, every 4 hours on the hour. For me, being within Mountain Standard, its at 1 am, 5 am, 9 am, 1 pm, 5 pm, 9 pm. Early Wednesday mornings is the weekly server maintenance and is probably why the server was acting flakey for a while late last night/early morning. It's been running fine since, at least until I stopped playing some 6 hours ago.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised at how little the server has crashed and how decent it seems to perform since I started playing 4 days ago, being an alpha and all.

The server is indeed set to restart each 4 hours, and that's about as "long" as it gets.
I remember reading in the gsp forum that Bohemia interactive is currently enforcing*/suggesting all servers to be restarted within this 4 hour frame as any longer does mess up the server.
*(some gsp's have it hardcoded in their ACP)

There were no crashes to be found by ViLayer in the last 4 days, only someone trying to start the server multiple times on maintenance day which showed as a crash.
Other than that it has been restarting every 4 hours as it's supposed to do.

That was me, but that was 4 hours before maintenance.

Any idea Quick about people getting wiped? People in teamspeak keep getting wiped on our server.

Couple remarks to be made:

First of all the server is in hardcore mode now, which is a seperate hive from the servers allowing 3rd person. So if you played a 3rd person server before, and then go to our server that person will not have his 3rd person character. You probably know this, but some people don't and confuse it with a character wipe. Once you return to a 3rd person server the old character will still be there. 3rd person and 1st person servers have seperate hives.

Second, the wiping thing has been a problem since last update. Can't find a whole lot of info on what causes it, but I do know most people suffer from it after a reconnect to a server that crashed/restarted. So if the server has a restart, planned or not, give it like at least 5 minutes to start up properly. Seems like you can sometimes connect to a server while it's not fully done restarting yet, greatly increasing the chances on a character wipe.

Third, at the next update there will be a global character wipe. Since stuff will get server specific persistent, they want to get rid of any bugged/hacked items that way (for example the hacked magazines). Were soon going to lose everything anyway again...

Fourth, and you can nag at me for saying this, it's dayz, it's open alpha, never get attached to your gear :p

Yeah, there's been a bug the last couple of weeks that when if you connect to a server after restart and before it syncs to the hive your character will load in as a bambi.

There have been some suggested fixes for if it happens but on the regular mode it never helped me get my char back.
One was that if you login as a bambi you don't move, quickly logout and log back in until your character is reset......

To prevent it from happening at all, wait until the server time says it's 09:00 instead of 08:00 or 09:20 after a restart.
This is on any server, not just ours btw,

There any way to place a script on the server to not allow people to join, or have it passworded for the first 2~ minutes after coming up, to keep this from happening? Going to have to research a bit and see if theres a way that we can keep it from happening as often.

It's only happened to me on our server.

I understand your all saying its set to restart every 4 hours...yesterday we joined the server as it was restarting, 2 hours later it restarted again..one of us got wiped joining the server, probably due to the bug mentioned above.

Played on it on sunday evening, joined it restarted 10 minutes later, not even 2 hours later it restarted again, and then a 3rd time roughly 2 hours after that at which point I went to bed and everyone else joined a different server.

So in the 2 days Ive played Ive experienced 5 restarts in a very short playing time.

Passworded servers are not connected to the hive, so that's not an option, it would actually make people lose their stuff by default since it would make the server lose connection to the hive.

btw, 5 minutes seems like a safer waiting period, I wait 5 minutes by default after a server restart, and never lost my character/stuff on our server yet.

The server restarts are something we have to live with. I've had evenings where the server would crash 2 times in an hour with only 4 people on, als had times where the server would only do scheduled server restarts with heaps of people on for the entire evening. It's a tough cookie to figure out. The server has been pretty stable for me lately though.

At the moment there is nothing we can do to any of the gamefiles, the server will be shut down and the customer can/will be blacklisted.

Nothing can be added except a skinny version of BEC supplied by the game service provider.

Also i cannot find out anything concerning the restarts after 2 hours.
The status and logs i can check have very limited info.

Judging by the graphs it was doing just fine....

This game has never been kind on Servers even when it was a mod.

Real Virtuality is a very smooth and fluid engine when there is no AI around; as soon as you add them and their pathfinding algo's start adding up it can bring even a monster rig to it's knees.

They're going to prove your statement next week with the A.I. Pathing stuff :)

You can notice these changes after each patch while looking at the performance tab in the admin cp.
Everytime they've done something to A.I. there was an increase in the servers CPU usage afterwards

DayZ is going to be harder for servers than ArmA2 was as it takes a lot of calculations away from the client and moving it to the server to make it harder for players to use scripts and the like.

I guess the graphs are wrong then :icon_wink:

Hopefully the server will get more stable, could always switch to a USA server! :D

Yeah they probably were, bunch of amateur GSP's getting on my nerves with them.
Same with the logs there seems to be some logic but i refuse to believe what they say because i simply know my memory is better than that of a quadcore 3.8 GHz 8gb DDR3 gameserver running 24/7.

Just an update, Kitlope (I can't believe he's finally come to his senses and stopped being Smack) and I were on for several hours last night and the Server performed exceptionally well.

One Server restart as expected and not too much in the way of latency issues (looping animations, having to cancel actions that never complete, not being able to manage inventory, etc.).

All in all it ran exceptionally well but there weren't that many people on it either. I think at the highest point it got to 6 or possibly 7 players ingame.

Well, as we all know the game is far from optimized - they'll be doing that when it goes beta. I start lagging when I get close to the bigger towns & cities, which is about par for the course I guess. My hardware isn't an issue either - running an Intel 980 6 core Gulftown 3.33 Ghz (OC'd to 3.72), 12 GB of DDR3@1600 and 2 NVidia 780 GTX's in SLI.

I can get a solid 100 frames in BF4 on Ultra but Day-Z brings the pc to it's knees. Kinda like where Duke is right now.

Funny that. I stopped driving people here and the server stopped being full.
