B2O Minecraft Craftbukkit Survival Server

B2O Minecraft Forge Server

Minecraft.jpg

Hey guys & gals,

Curious if we have any, 'Minecraft'ers', here on the forum and or people interested in trying something new.

I was thinking of running a Minecraft Craftbukkit Survival server (basically vanilla Minecraft with Bukkit plugins).

It would be a whitelisted server, e.g. the server parses a whitelist text file for names allowed access to the server prior to any specific player logging in.

This is typically just a first line of defense for keeping the general riff-raff out.

I would be running a number of plugins and the server likely will hold, 'up to', 45 players/slots. (dependent on # of plugins, so probably closer to 30 player slots)

If you are not familiar with Minecraft, it is a Sandbox Survival (or creative) multi or single player game.

Here is a wiki link describing Minecraft: http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Minecraft_Wiki

Link where it can be purchased: https://minecraft.net/

In survival mode, players are tasked with crafting their own tools, gathering resources, surviving the various zombies and monsters that come out at night, and building pretty much anything your imagination can come up with.

As collated by a pretty crafty and geeky group of individuals, the actual Minecraft map (or world) is nearly infinite, estimated at roughly 7 times the size of Earth. Each world is unique when generated and has various, 'Biomes'. Biomes are areas that contain variables specific to their area, e.g. Mountain, forest, desert, plains, swamp area biomes etc.

As a word of warning, Minecraft is addicting and a lot of fun!

As mentioned, if there is enough interest here, I would be happy to set up a server. There are many very fun pvp faction plugins, hunger games plugins and more. Or simply setting the server to hardcore and seeing who lasts the longest could be fun.

Here is the link for the system requirements: https://help.mojang.com/customer/portal/articles/325948-minecraft-system-requirements

Cheers,

Doc

Love Minecraft. I have my own server that I'd run with some friends and my fiance that ran a few bukkit mods (mostly centered around Industrial Craft II... best mod for minecraft in my opinion). The server was also centered around hard survival only. We liked the authentic experience and did not want to tarnish it with creative in any way. So we made some pretty amazing things the hard way.

Haven't had it up in a while though. Usually go through a major MC period where I play on a daily basis for a few months then tire out of it for a bit then always come back for more. I could be convinced to put it back online ;)

Big minecraft nerd though... I've been known to do some really awesome stuff with redstone and some great architectural structures :)

I've been the same with it. Play, and play and play it, then need a break. Guess its true for almost anything I suppose. But its the one game I continue to come back to. My biggest issue has just been being able to find other like minded individuals to game with. Either way I'm good server wise, e.g. you want to run one or I can.

It'd be great to get some interest and a B2O server up and going. :D

Are you familiar with IC2? I will say right away that buildcraft is terrible and IC2 is where it's at... It comes back to the authentic, survival only style hard game. It's an extremely well balanced mod that adds an ton of awesome stuff, yet all well balanced.

I'm not too familiar with mods. I ran a Craftbukkit server, so I know about and used Bukkit plugins. Part of the issue with mods might be other people trying to install them on the client side. With plugins, they only need to run server side. I am not familiar with IC2 however. I assume thats a newer or better version of the buildcraft mod?

**edit** ah ok, I found a link here: http://www.9minecraft.net/industrial-craft-2-mod/

Yea I remember first seeing industrial craft and thought how awesome that was, but never actually got it working on my client.

I have my Minecraft phases from time to time just like you guys, but I usually only play pure vanilla. I have a local server where I play with my son and them white listed on another MP server, but I haven't been on that months.
Not sure I want to learn the intricacies of a mod, but general interest is there. On the other hand I am not sure how much time I would have to play as GTA5 right now takes up most of my gaming time.

I played minecraft in survival for hundreds of hours. I mainly love to build though, I love making large buildings, bridges, towns and even entire cities, but kind of grew tired of doing it in survival, as it would take months on end of excavating materials that I would need for my building projects. I literally dug out entire desert biomes over the course of weeks just for making sandstone, created mines where you could get lost for hours, etc.

Eventually I switched to creative, and made huge projects, upto making entire walled medieval cities, castles, miles upon miles of farmgrounds with farms, mills, handcrafted extensive underground dungeons etc.

It's a thing I absolutely love to do, but boy, does it eat time, I've must have spent thousands of hours building, like every evening and weekend for many, many months, if not years on end.

So yeah, I played minecraft, know how to survive, I suck at redstone contraptions, but building in minecraft is absolutely my greatest love. See some sample pics of my work and style of building :)

I would be interested in some survival, yeah. At the same time I'm a bit hesitant as I know how cought up I can get in it.... (see below, lol)

Very very nice stuff there Shilka. Great attention to detail. I need to get screens together of stuff I've done. You certainly are a city buildier ;)

That is why I think IC2 is just about the greatest mod. It is built around the idea of electricity / power to run machines that do a variety of things. (Not just machines though, armor, weapons, tools, etc) And unlike in buildcraft, running and building the machines / infrastructure is a very fun yet challenging task. For example, there are auto miners that function very similar to buildcraft quarries (that automine straight down a certain area) however, unlike in buildcraft which is very cheap to automine and pretty much a cheat, in IC2, a miner requires a LOT of power to run continuously.

On the cheap but low output end you have renewables obviously. You'll need a lot of them, like solar panels or wind generators, to power only a few basic machines. For the more advanced machines, and things you need to run all the time, there is only one solution for the most part: nuclear power. Can be extremely dangerous if you don't know what you're doing (a nuclear explosion is enormous), and is quite complicated, but can provide lots of energy.

My good friend who I always delve into MC with was the same way, but now he never plays vanilla. Its a matter of finding the right mods to compliment how you like to play. Some people like ridiculous, overpowered mods that almost act like cheats within survival.

Actually I have the modpack that is exactly what my server runs which I send to people, which all they need to do is make sure their mods folder is clear, then just drop it in. Its very simple, and I've talked many people through it before. It is a little more technical then the plugins, but it really is not that hard at all.

What modpacks are you guys running?

We had 2 servers running 2 yrs ago, one starting with Feed the Beast (FTB) and another one which D.O.A. suggested and i can't remember.

I had tons of fun with that, and i am still figuring out how D.O.A. always had a nuclear power plant after 2 days on any server :p

What i didn't like is the hosting and the way certain mods work.
I think i spend more time re-coding and writing new code than playing.

If you need anything tho, just give a shout.
I'm pretty sure most of the required info is available in house.

Some of the mods on my server (can't tell you what versions exactly, I'm not at home):

  • IndustrialCraft 2
  • IC2 Support mods like Advanced Machines, Repulsion Systems
  • Bibliocraft
  • Biomes o Plenty
  • Carpenters Blocks
  • Redlogic (A must have for everyone)
  • Redlogic support mods
I believe there are a couple other minor mods. But as I explained, none of these change how the game is played drastically, nor make survival really easy and basically drift from the authentic survival experience.

Installation is easy.

I'd be interested in a server if someone put one up. I usually play Vanilla, but I'd be willing to try out some mods.

Maybe my son would play sometimes too, but he doesn't have much patience for mining and farming. He's a builder and redstone savant (seriously, he's better at redstone than I am).

Sounds like more and more like I should fire up the ol' server. Countdown to all my freetime being gone?

Hey Daunt, so do you run a server on your private machine? My only concern is it being up 24/7. I'm also aware of other games/sims that we all take part in here so I don't want anyone feeling like Minecraft would take up all their free time, even for you should you decide to run your server. I mean if you want, thats cool. I just don't want you feeling that you have to. Remember, I offered to put one up of my own. ;)

Again, I have no qualms paying for a hosted service. The last one I used for six months and had not one problem.

I like the mod idea, so long as things are accessible to new players as well. If installing them is as easy as you say it is Daunt, I'll take your for your word it, but you will definitely have to at least walk me through the process on TS and any others that need help.

The responses on this have been great! I'm actually a bit surprised to be honest. Shilka, I thought I made some pretty impressive builds, but you just put my stuff to shame there man...LOL Very impressive to say the least!!

And yea, I can do basic stuff with redstone, but don't expect me to be making, 'and or, gates, 'nor', gates and the like...

It's amazing what some people can do with redstone, one of the guys I played with once made this automated rail goods receiving centre, and it would automatically sort railcars by goods as they came in, empty them and send them back to where they came from. It had like 4 stories of redstone contraptions under the main building, and I have absolutely no clue how he did this with the redstone stuff you have ingame. His house was amazing with all sorts of automated defenses, retracting drawbridges, and all of that kind of stuff. I'm already happy to be able to make a door open from a distance, lol.

Uhm yea same here...haha

I've seen a few vids of pretty much the same. I think a few people even got together and built a basic computer... I mean really? WTF? LOL

But yea, you can pretty much build whatever you can conjur up in yer head. ;)

I actually think there is enough interest to get something going. Daunt let me know if you're going to run yours, otherwise I can set one up this weekend. Lets get the logistics sorted.

One idea to consider as well is I can run one from a hosted service Daunt and give you perms to add mods. At least this would free up your personal resources. Just a thought. Either way let me know.

It is as private machine yes. In the past, I would keep it up 24/7, not a big deal. Going forward I can do this, I think I'd probably take it down during the rare times I'm in a race (aka a couple hours Tuesday nights).

My thing with hosted service is, from my understanding it is hard to customize the server. Because of the way mods are in minecraft, they're usually behind a version or two. So I've always ran a server that was behind... in fact I'd probably not update the server that I ran before to a newer version. If I recall correctly it is running 1.7.2... I could be wrong.

And I have no problem walking people through set up. I work in IT (for the most part) so I'm used to it. Not an issue.

As I said, I love messing with redstone... my friend I played with always managed to eff my contraptions up. But some of my favorite things were my rail station (that allowed you to select where you want to go and it sent you on your way to the appropriate rail line), a hidden waterfall and other hidden doorways, an ultra awesome trap for a guy we all didn't like that basically fully encased him in obsidian when he fell in.

Depends on the host, managed hosting usually means you have to go through the hosts control panel, but most hosting gives you access to do whatever.

The pack is called Resonant Rise , running 250 active mods .
And the secret is (well "was" being the correct term now) Unemployment ;) .

Well, my original plan was just to install a Craftbukkit 1.7.10 version. I believe IC2 supports the same? If so shouldn't be an issue, or is there more to consider when installing mods server side?
