I must admit for £15 it's well worth it for the improvements in Graphics and AI. Plus it's in 'MURICAAAA so I can have my country music on the in truck radio and live out the 'MURICAAAAAn dream.

I like it and it's well worth the money imo. It's interesting how divisive this has been. £15 for DLC is cheap for DLC by today's standards. So even if you consider it no more than DLC (which it isn't) then it's still a bargain!

And this comes from the king of refunds :p

Just had some reading on the ets forums, and I'm starting to see what Injens problem with the game is. The game has no localized prices... it's $20 everywhere, also in the countries that are used to paying $12 for a newly released game that we (i the Netherlands) pay $70 for. No wonder it looks expensive to you Injen XD You see it costing the same as an AAA game, while for us it is at least 3 times as cheap...

Personally I don't hae a problem it's based on the ETS2 engine, and having the same menu. Never felt the menu was broken, and other then taking a job occasionally I barely use the menu anyway. I actually spent near all day yesterday to get used to how different it feels from ETS, so in that sense it's not a reskin. Not only everything looks different, but it also feels different.

Just have been practicing unsynchronised shifting, and boy, it's hard at times, but good fun! I suspect some iron filings made it to the bottom of the gearbox though XD

yeah... little expensive. ashamed to admit, when we have an average monthly salary $145. even if it cost less, im sad that developers from so great game like ETS2 make this crap.

typo ~145

Shilka is there any way to change the location of the route advisor? I'd like to have it lower so it's not impeding the view out of the windscreen but can't find anything in the options. Pressing F3 to have it semi transparent is still the same.

I was going to wait for the G29 to turn up to play with a wheel but had to hook up the DFGT and with Track IR and country radio on this game is pure relaxation.... :icon_cool:

How soon did you buy your own truck if you have done so already?

I'm still on the fence with this one, slightly wavering toward purchase strictly because (and only because) of your stream and enthusiasm Shilka.

Having said that I am very disappointed though in a lot of things with this game as the price is too much at $30 CDN for a very unfinished game.

This is not American Truck Simulator, this is partial West Coast Simulator at best. Spin it anyway you wish but anyone who played ETS and followed ATS a bit can plainly see we won't be driving America anytime soon without the help of the Modding Community.

Only offering Paccar at release is silly and I'm not fanboi enough to look past that. They've had years to make this happen so why this is a thing is beyond me?

Yes I've read their Blog post in the matter but if they're waiting for North American Truck Manufacturers to get involved due to the success of ATS then they'll be waiting a lot longer.

They should have had enough compelling reasons to get Navistar, Volvo, Western Star, Mack and their divisions interested, at least one of them anyway. I don't even understand for the life of me how they can't have Volvo, isn't Volvo in ETS?

While it's true the next map will be free that makes little difference if additional DLC Maps cost an arm and a leg. Does anyone actually know what the pricing model will be for additional DLC? The exchange rate on $5 and $10 a pop is going to add up quickly if I have to do it multiple times to populate America, not to mention Canada.

In fact this is the single biggest reason I'm not interested currently and that is because are there even plans to populate Canada?

I guess we'll have to look to Promods for this and probably everything else while SCS does little by comparison.

I'm also extremely disappointed in the map populous and there's no amount of logic that can be thrown at me to address that problem. Even if the size of the map is huge, the city and town count is not. I've only been to California a handful of times but know for a fact it's far denser (city wise) than represented in ATS.

Anyway I don't mean to do this as a rant which is how I know it's coming across. The simple fact is I found value in ETS but that's because it was something I'd not seen before. I've never been to Europe so it was a complete novelty for me and was fun to discover.

ATS however takes place in my back yard. I've driven through a good portion of the US and flown over the rest and know that it'll be forever before we're even close to seeing it fully flushed out.

I was looking forward to driving the Rocky Mountains, visiting North Dakota and seeing the wood chipper Steve Buscemi was chopped up in, driving through the rust belt, seeing endless rows of corn in Iowa and lastly running over a croc in Florida.

We're not nearly there yet, it'll be a long, long time coming and I don't want to pay several hundred dollars to get there through the micro transaction model SCS was clearly developing in ETS.

I see what you're saying Duke, and you're right on all accounts. I guess what makes it different for me is that I've been following development from the very start, so I've known all of it for years upfront.

Two years ago I already knew that they were not going the unlicensed start way as they did with ETS, as it very much complicated getting the licenses after that.

Also 2 years ago, I read that ATS would start out with just the state of California, so, expecting only one state at release my surprise has been positive that there are actually 2 states (3 soon (tm)) to start off with.

As for city density, the same goes for ETS to be honest and the novelty factor you had with ETS (where the cities look like nothing compared to reality, not even taking the scaling down factor into account) is the same novelty factory I'm experiencing with ATS now being European myself.

The truck licensing is a b*tch factor indeed. I've listened to the CEO interview for near to two hours, and they've been on the licensing for years. Each single model needs to be seperately licensed, and for example Paccar didn't even want to discuss licensing for older models initially, because they wanted to have their modern top models in the (released) game first. Same goes for Volvo. It's in ETS already, but getting the VNL in there needs starting from scratch with the whole licensing process again, talking with different people they had talked to before, as those switched jobs etc.

Meanwhile, SCS development team has grown from 16 to 60 people, there are two teams working on seperate state(s) DLC now, one in SE direction, one in NNE direction, and a lot more stuff is in development and/or wishlisted, like world of trucks development (virtual trucking companies and eventually coop multiplayer), as well as ETS still being supported (new licensed Renault model + adding south of France + reworking North of France coming up)

I do agree though, this is just the foundation of the game that needs years of building upon. If you're not in a hurry, wait for the extra state and 2 additional trucks, or the next DLC, or the next steam sale, or a year or two untill there is coop multiplay.

Currently I'm enjoying the game, mainly because the map is of much better quality then ETS, it has much better detailing, more diversity already, more personality, more grime, more elevation changes and curves in roads, more types of roads, better background scenery, better cities, more movement (from pedestrians to tumbleweeds) etc. The map itself, despite my high expectations, is even better then I thought it would be.
Lighting is better too, dawn and dusk are stunning, night is darker then ETS, night really feels like night now, also in cities.
More diversity in deliveries, next to companies you also deliver to car showrooms, gas stations, shops and roadworks, to name a few.
The new parking system is nice to where you can choose between skip parking entirely, easy parking (slightly easier then ETS) and hard parking (harder then ETS, and sometimes downright challenging, ever for me after 950 hours of play)
Good diversity in trailers, especially also in length and axle setup, and they look better as they have some proper weathering.

Also some personal dislikes, like trucksounds are a bit tame (but realistic for a modern well insulated truck cabin.
The thing I curently like least is the FFB, some of it like road surface FFB is OK, but steering while doing higher speed cornering has too little FFBin my opinion

All in all, I'm liking it so far, and knowing how many hours I will be pooring into this game, it's good value for me. Of course that might be different for others ;)

Thanks for the thoughtful response NT, very much appreciated.

One thing I did notice and liked (assuming I noticed it at all) was animated clouds. Is this a thing or was it just the stream quality making it appear as such?

To be honest, I've been so concentrated on my driving (it did take some getting used to), that I haven't been able to notice, I'm already missing half the speed limit signs because I'm too busy watching other stuff. I'll have a good look ina bit (I have noticed animated fog when driving near water in the morning btw)

I've noticed a big leap in fidelity and features in this title. I echo everything Shilka mentions, especially dusk and dawn. And the little things going on make the world feel more alive and less sterile than ETS.

I also echo the fact that for us Europeans driving on U.S. roads with U.S. rules is a novelty for us so it does feel fresh. It's interesting how anyone manages to get around without roundabouts for example. The first time I drove along a coastal road at dusk with the sun going down over the hills delivering Ethane with Johnny Cash on the radio was a real seminal moment for me where I knew that the money was well spent.

I'm enjoying the game, though it does bug me a bit how silly some things are like every single lighted intersection having a stop sign. And the two lane freeways in populated areas. Also, not sitting in stop/go traffic.

Lots of medical marijuana dispensaries though, so that's accurate :D

I googled that, it looks amazing. Would love to travel there one day although it will probably never happen. Is it in the game though, I dunno?

This might've changed my opinion. Such a great game!....

Not yet, they'll have to release Oregon yet before you get to see it ;)

It's actually a really cool drive all the way from California to Washington State.

If it's anything like Canadian Train Simulator it should be awesome...

Duke - if you could make that trip in any vehicle, what would it be and why?

Wow that was just sick, nice find!

I'd love to be in the Engine of that train just because of how awesome it looks. Visibility in the Engines is pretty good so I can't imagine how awestruck the Conductor must have been.

I think riding a Skidoo around it would also be good fun but exceptionally dangerous.

The ultimate though would probably be snowboarding behind the train on a tow rope similar to water skiing. A snowboard wouldn't notice the railroad ties either.

I watched the first hour so far. It was very d00k like;

"I don't think you get fined for not using headlights in this game"
*gets fined 10 seconds later*

"They have to do a bit of work on the lights"
*forgot to turn lights on*

Also, how come you needed to turn down graphic settings? I can run it all fine on highest, just have mirrors on medium.

Oh, and Little P and me 'rave about every game'? Hahaha that's classic :D

lol, d00k like, wtf is that supposed to mean?

I had to turn down the graphics because I have 60 zillion Chrome Tabs open and I'm streaming at 720p with a high bitrate (2000) which is quite CPU intensive.

The game ran smooth at mostly maxed details but would sometimes stutter during weather changes and the like. Turning down graphics makes no difference to the viewer image quality on Twitch but smoothens out the framerate during streaming which is important to me.
