Nice, where is your power source? I see power lines... My town has power lines everywhere I think I may have too many

Here's my city of 10 000. Gotta start thinking of some better interchanges towards the industrial area although the 6 lane roads (two and one way) do work quite well. Gotta metro train though going underground which sure helps, the peons seem to like it. And where's the simple overpasses? I don't need a great big cloverleaf or any of that stuff, just need simple overpass for straight thru traffic on some roads that eliminate some of the traffic lights, unless turning. Hopefully I unlock them, but I doubt it so hopefully it's patched in.

Tunnels are supposed to be patched in later. I have found that this game is a lot more forgiving than past Maxis/EA Sim Cities (never played the new one though), everything is 80% or better in the Sim happiness department. Don't ask me how the fuck I managed that.

While building a road you can use page up / page down for raising and lowering a road, so you can make your own overpasses :)

Is it just me or does it seem pretty easy to make money? I have only played a couple hours so far but the city I made has been cruising in at least a couple thousand in profits easy all the time. Even after investing in police, fire, some education (elementary and high school).

Yes, I'm making good money too. I've seen differently on streams though.

One of the bad mistakes you can make is to delete large areas to redo them, just to see your income suddenly go from +8000 to -14000. I saw a guy do it on a stream, he deleted a whole residential area to redo it, his income went negative, and because of less inhabitants a bunch of shops went broke, a bunch of industry had no workers, and within 15 minutes or so his finances spiraled totally out of control.

I've seen similar with traffic getting out of hand leading to abandonment, and someone investing all his money in a huge buildingspree, then discovering he ran out of power, and he had no loans or money to buy more power, and half his city starved.

I'm making a steady 9000 now, but if I look in my finances, that 9000 is only like 0.5% profit, so actually you're walking a fine line. However if you keep good reserves, and stay on top of things constantly you should be good. If it really feels too easy, the game comes with a default hard mode mod, which will raise upkeep for stuff etc to make it more challenging.

I did not know this. I will have to try it! Thanks. Also nice road systems.

Ahhh thank you. Yes, this has helped, now I have a couple of "expressways" to the Industrial area so traffic isn't nearly the bottlenecked mess it was.

Nice road system, reminds me of some Arizona suburban sprawl images I have seen in magazines and google over the years. I prefer the grid look but have started to add a curved freeway. Here's my mess so far:

Starting to look like a city!

Yeah, that's nice! We actually have about the same amount of people, but mine are smeared oout over at least twice the area heh. And boy, once you start zoning high density, the trouble really starts... It gets increasingly harder, especially without any predesign like I'm doing it, I'm more like, go spaghetti, then clean up after.... Challenging, but fun :)
Looks like you'll end upwith way more people and way better coverage then I will.

And just to show what's possible in this game, someone actually recreated the GTA V map with cities: Skylines already;

I like this game allot and I hope they do some addons for it like being able to lay down farms and industry chains.

Kittyville now at 30 000. I've put a lot of hours into this game, I'm taking my time and being a bit methodical. Or as d0000k likes, anal retentive.

Looking brilliant there chaps. I've not had much time to put into this or any games over the last couple of days but I think I'll sit down and start a new city tonight now I know a bit more about how it all works. Am I right in saying you can't upgrade a road if it has a fire station/polic station etc. on it? How does that work then.

EDIT: That GTA V map is impressive!

Not sure, I think it needs to be the same width as the old road and you'll have no issues. If it's wider, well then you gotta destroy stuff to make room. Trust me - I've done it a lot.

I'm also performing a little experiment to see how noise affects height and upgradability of buildings. If you look at the screenie below, you'll see a sports stadium and It's very loud (100 on the noise scale in game). I plunked some high density residential and office, made sure there was parks, metro and stuff to get the land value up... and it seems that the closer buildings to the stadium are stunted and they don't want to make that last jump of upgrade. So noise seems to affect the buildings and probably the Sims happiness, so keep this in mind when building. What a waste of $200 000 but oh well I got 3 million lol.

Anyone else think that the buildings could be taller when maxed? You get a few tall buildings in the special perks tab but overall I wish buildings were higher, I mean it looks like they max out around 30 floors. Give me a break, Edmonton even has higher buildings than that.

Found this over at their forums for anyone wondering what Paradox's future road map is with Skylines.

If you want to upgrade a road to a wider type, and there is special stuff like a police station in the way, you can click on the police station and select the left option to move it to a new spot, it's cheaper then destroying and rebuilding, also, it will leave any policecars on the way alone. Cemetaries and garbage dumps can't be moved when they have stuff in it, you need to select the option to empty it first (either to a different cemetary or cre matorium / landfill or incinerator). Then when it's empty it can be moved or destroyed.

lol that was actually a good read Kitty :icon_lol:

"Or do they just not care for each other because she let the kids move away and he still smells like burnt garbage?"

Haha that was a great read. It also shows how well the game is simulated.
I know there are certain game limtations, for example, 'only' 85.000 people will commute simultaneously, the rest of the upto 1.000.000 people will neatly wait for their turn to commute, go to school etc., but as this article shows, they will do it consistently, hold their job, and act their age. Fun article!
