Elite: Dangerous

Have been trading my butt off yesterday, made a good bunch of money though, alternating between missions, regular trade, rare trade goods and doing some exploring on the way.

Today I almost lost my type 6; I came across this system with 2 stars right next to eachother. When I took this screenshot all was ok, but on my return trip my angle towards the nav beacon was in such a way that I ended up right inbetween the suns, and almost burnt to a crisp. Came to an emergency stop but temparatures just kept rising, so I panic framshifted out of there, and saw temp rising to 340% before it started going down again. Good thing I had military grade hull, anything cheaper would have evaporated sooner and I would have lost 1.4 million of palladium and 300K of insurance payments. Good fun though, one moment you're happily cruising along, next moment you have to dry the sweat off your hotas, lol!

Wow lol that must of been a brown trouser moment! :icon_eek: Great picture Shilka :D

Duke - stumbled upon this in the official forums and thought I would pass on the info;

Hi, if anyone wants to map yaw control to sim racing wheel accelerator and clutch pedals on separate axes (e.g. Logitech G25) this can be done by creating a virtual joystick using vJoy and FreePIE third party software - here's how to do it...

1. Install vJoy and FreePIE, and create a virtual joystick

2. Enter the following script, run it each time before starting Elite:

# RUDDER virtual joystick
from System import Int16
# position of G25 in USB game controller list (starts at 0)
joyID = 3
if starting: # indent following lines
<indent>system.setThreadTiming(TimingTypes.Highres SystemTimer)
<indent>system.threadExecutionInterval = 5 # loop delay
<indent>joystick[joyID].setRange(Int16.MinValue / 2.001, Int16.MaxValue / 2.001)
# combine accelerator and clutch to single axis (might need to mod this for your wheel)
vJoy[0].x = 0.5 * joystick[joyID].sliders[1] - 0.5 * joystick[joyID].y

3. Edit the file c:\users\<user>\appdata\local\frontier developments\elite dangerous\options\bindings\custom.binds
<YawAxis>
<Binding Device="vJoy" Key="Joy_XAxis" />
<Inverted Value="0" />
<Deadzone Value="0.00000000" />
</YawAxis>

notes:
(a) accelerator+brake does not require this method, but they have different weights
(b) indents lost in post, use TAB to <indent> lines
(c) value of joyID corresponds to device position in USB game controllers list (item1=0)
(d) custom.binds has to be edited manually, it won't work if you try to select the pedals in the bindings menu
(e) vJoy uses signed drivers and is compatible with Win 8/64
(f) links to software: vjoy and freepie

So, how we all doing?

I'm in a little cluster of Empire systems surrounded by the Federation trading in my Type - 6.

Trying to find a more profitable route, I have been trading with 112 Cargo getting a combined profit per ton of 1,778CR. That's with one jump between stations. Each round trip can be done in 13 minutes if I nail each approach and landing, or 15 on average. My fuel costs are just under 2,000CR, and I've got it to the point of not sustaining any damage running with no shields. Been interdicted a LOT but manage to get away each time thankfully, still on zero deaths :)

I've currently got just over 3 Million, so a LONG way off my Type 7. With this route I'm getting roughly 790,000CR per hour, but I'm searching around for better routes nearby, that's what I'll be doing tonight. Still refusing to use any trade tools or 3rd party applications, doing all the leg work myself with regular trading, I stopped doing rares as soon as I bought the Type 6. I'm guessing you are in a type 7 (at least) by now Shilka?

How's everyone else doing? :)

Well, have been playing spintires for the past couple of days :)

I do have like 13 million in the bank, and a type 6 with 6 million in upgrades, so if I would trade in I would be in a type 7 now yeah. Decided to keep my type 6 though, so I want to make another 7 million at least to get the type 7 and have some upgrade/insurance/trade money left over.

I also started playing in open for a few days... Got pirated by humans successfully twice. First time by a friggin anaconda, he floated right in front of me (man that thing is large from 3 yards distance), scanned me, deployed a shitload of hardpoints and demanded (only) 20 tons of my cargo. Needless to say I gave it to him, better the losing 1.5 million in cargo and insurance, lol.

Second one was a sidewinder, also neatly demanding cargo. I said lol, started dropping chaff, flew into him while boosting, did an ecm jam burst and frameshifted out of there. Needless to say his pew pew didn't penetrate my class A 4 shields nor dent my military grade compound shields.

Managed to evade all the other interdictions (about 5 more of them). Good fun though, actually the docking is the most dangerous part, with smugglers boosting through the letterbox past you doing 350... It's not that dangerous out there, only the heavy populated systems, and for other reasons popular systems seem to have (a bunch) of pirates in them. Quite a few in Eravate btw, so seems I didn't think of it as a good starting point for nothing...

Will be back to elite soon though, already miss it :D

Ah, I see :) Won't be long before you are a billionaire! ;) That pirating sounds awesome, good to hear the 'Conda pilot was doing it right. The Sidey pilot though - lol!

I'm now in an Asp, upgraded to full cargo so 128T. I made the mistake of upgrading to the Asp with 6M CR in the bank and 1M trade in for the Type 7. Turns out that doesn't get you much... DOH!

I've built up the bankroll to upgrade it to full cargo capacity and this next run will get me back up to financing a full cargo hold of the commodities I'm trading in.

Then I will have to keep being careful to get over the threshold of insurance, then I can start upgrading as I go while keeping enough for insurance.

If you're wondering why it's called Elite: Dangerous, try missing a Type 9 docking by about a millimetre after mistakenly boosting out of the letterbox at over 250... that was a proper panic, can't believe I made it!

Pretty close to my first death there and busted back to a Sidewinder with 1K CR... :eek:

You can push it 160t in the Asp if you switch all the available slots to cargo.

I've pretty much stopped playing for the minute, until they add some more to do or make the missions more interesting.

Mondo, unless you know something I don't the max is 128? Are you thinking of another ship?

Probably good to take a break if you are burnt out definitely, I'm still loving trading while watching a movie or catching up with House of Cards. Were you playing in open or solo Mondo?

Still haven't started on the missions yet to get my Empire rank up there, looking forward to that :)

Well, just lost 1.5 million when I got interdicted by an ASP which started shooting at me right away. He took out my propulsion pretty quick, no time to get away. He must have had all railguns or something, because he shredded me apart pretty quick... Back to group play for now :p

An all multicannon Asp can probably do that as well or two beams in the 2 slots and all multis in the 1 slots. It pretty much shreds anything apart from Pythons or larger.

Did you remove all the modules from the Asp including sheilds, scanners etc? I played a bit of both. It's just a bit shallow at the moment so hasn't held my interest.

Yes I have 4 x beams in the class 1 and 2 x gimballed multi - cannons in the class 2, can confirm it works a treat :) I have an A class Power distributor in there so with 4 pips to weapons you can really fry your target with 4 fixed beams

Interdictions are fun now, no running, just "oh, you'd like my cargo eh? Have this instead" *BOOM* :D

I basically put all modules available for cargo in there, when I had it set up that way yes Mondo. Max is definitely 128.

I've now got shields on it though, the costs of a little fight or a little ding on docking is a bit high with an Asp. A shield (and two point defences, heat shield launcher etc.) really saves a lot more than I'd make from having a few extra tons cargo ;)

Well, not my best day yesterday, flew out of an orbis station, had to curve to the back of the station to point at my target system, and boosted straight into the ring... BOOOOOM. Another million lost, lol, and myself fully to blame. Made some money too though, so now at around 15 million, 5 million more to go before I buy my type 7. once I buy it I'm thinking of turning my type 6 into a miner/explorer, where I will take it to explore on the way while searching for good mining spots, whenever trading with the type 7 becomes too much of a grind.

Came across some nice systems yesterday, found a nice system with 9 stations in it, and none had been added to the trade query page, so I spent close to 4 hours exploring and adding all stations on the page (finally got enough admin rights to add stations and systems). Really was a nice system, some dual planets, and my first sighting of a coriolis station with arms. According to the forums they are sort of industrial centrifugal seperators, I bet it works as the G-force in those arms must be pretty large...

It might be the Type 6 I'm thinking of. The Type 7 I think goes to 212 which is 250-300k profit every 10 minutes or so which is ludicrous.

I experimented a bit with the armour and if you have military grade armour you'll take far less damage from hits direct to the hull. I slammed into an asteroid at full power and took no damage with that armour. I did the same by accident without armour and went down to 49%. But the weight is quite severe.

Amazing shots Shilka! Seriously.

I can already imagine a mini game with us where we maneuver into position each side of the station at exactly the point one of the pods at the end of the arm would swoop by and play a deep space version of "chicken" in sidewinders with no shields lol. Let's make it happen! ;)

Mondo - yes the Type 7 with my current route would net me 300k every 13 minutes (232T no shields). Not too shabby! I'm sitting at around 10M in assets right now (225k per 12 minutes in Asp) so not far off the Type 7.

Shilka is keeping his ships but I'm going to trade in the Asp for the Type 7 and try and get a Type 9. After that I will keep the Type 9 and move on to obtaining the Clipper :) (The Type 9 with 532T on this route would net me 1.1M every 13 minutes)

After I've upgraded the Clipper I will get myself a sidey (for the view) and kit it out for exploration, then head out into the deep unknown.

I've got a lot of mileage ahead of me in this, totally hooked in every way, love it :)

Shilka - try turning your hud off for your shots? Those would look amazing in high res with no hud imo :)

Oh yeah, forgot to tell, I flew into an orbis station right behind an imperial clipper yesterday!
Targeted it for I didn't know what it was, well a clipper... It is BIG, I estimate it to be just a bit wider then a type 9 with those engine pods sticking out at the sides. The rest is pretty long and sleek looking, but boy, you won't have much room for error when entering the letterbox... Awesome looking vessle though, I can definately see why you want it, you'll be getting all the babes!

Make sure you have about 25m total assets before you get that type 7. It's has a very low range so needs the 5m A class FSD plus a cargo load can be 2m +. I don't think it can land on anything but large pads either. It's a proper space truck.

Well, it will take me a bit longer to get the type 7.... I decided to go to a far away alliance system. It won't be exhausted by traders soon, because the base I chose as home base has seen 3 ships in the past 24 hours... never seen such a low count in a coriolis station. Down side is, the system itself, and all the neighbouring systems are nowhere to be found in the trade query pages, so I started the monsterjob to add like 25 systems + their stations to the database, it will take me dozens of hours. Well at least I'll be consulting my own data when using the online trade query, so far I made 1944 updates to the database, must admit it feels less of an 'easy' way to trade now I'm putting in much more work then I spent time using it to my advantage...

I just want my home base, and all the bases that can be reached with one jump in the database, so I can start building up a specific alliance base by doing missions, and taking the best trade back and forth at the same time. First I'll aim for the entire system to become alliance, then see if it will expand.

Must say I'm getting interdicted a LOT, since I spend a lot of time drifting in space noting down travel distances to stations etc. Or perhaps it is because the pirates in these systems barely ever see traffic. Even seen some outposts that had 0 traffic in the past 24 hours.
BTW, now I'm putting in so much data I'm learning a lot of it, what kind of commodities to expect where, but also, that some outposts don't have refuel (thought you could refuel everywhere). I've also encountered a systems that has both alliance and federation stations within the same system, also something I didn't know could be possible. Very interesting, but also very tiring having to put in all data, ranging from comodities to type of station, politics etc in the database. I will persevere though, so I can execute my plans of expanding that alliance system...

Here's a little "training" video on how to get started. If you liked Privateer or other space trading games - this game has that. Along with Pirating, missions and exploration - it's really a beautiful game.

Welcome to the forums LoneRegister :) Nice format for your video there, hope you are still enjoying the epic space opera that is Elite: Dangerous ;)

Enjoying reading the CMDR posts/logs.

An update from me;

CMDR Aquila Oculus captains log. 180115

Well, I now have my Lakon Type 7 and I'm trading between two friendly stations, 216T at a time. I have deduced that she needs shields as it's a tight fit in/out of the stations, and don't even think about trying it with landing gear down... Pulling in 301,536 per run (there and back) each time, and it's only one 13.14LY jump so comfortable for the Type 7.

I'm enjoying watching the credits roll in now I have the shields back on, I was losing far more in hull repairs than I would gain in that little extra cargo space.

In the Type 6 and Asp I was getting interdicted maybe 1 in every 4 jumps, in the Type 7 I would say that's gone down to 1 in 10, and I can get away pretty easily now I have upgraded the thrusters and fitted defences. The shields normally hold up until the FSD has charged.

I did have a Dropship interdict me and that was an entirely different matter, man those ships have some firepower! Still got away though, just...

After amassing nearly enough for a Clipper, I am now embarking on my next goal - to obtain Baron rank in the Imperial Navy.

I started off by storing the Type 7 and kitting out a Viper to A Class with the best weapons I could buy. I then accepted one of the 100K+ Pirate assassination missions to try and get noticed by the Navy.

I quickly hunted down the Pirate via a CMDR in a Sidewinder giving me a clue. He had just narrowly escaped an encounter with the Pirate "Jim Roth" and after obtaining his last known location I warped there to find the dastardly Pirate orbiting the Star. Unfortunately for me and my Viper he was in an Anaconda and clearly hadn't had his coffee that morning. In no mood for games, the Pirate opened fire and took my A Class shields down to 1 ring immediately. I popped Shield cells and retreated to try and size up my prey. Clearly I wasn't going to win this fight head on.

After putting some distance between him and I, I lined up my first run. Full pips to weapons. 2 pips to shields. Hardpoints deployed... and boost towards him. His beam turrets were struggling to track me as I desperately deployed counter measures, my point defences struggling to keep up with the number of incoming missiles. I hit him with everything I had targeting his power plant subsystem in an attempt to cripple his offensive capabilities, and it only took his shields down by half a ring. What followed was an epic battle that lasted 10 minutes.

My brave Viper managed to get him down to 48% Hull before his shields came back online, I knew then it was all over. He unleashed a Volley that finally bested us.

Thrusters disabled. I warped out to find myself with no propulsion, no canopy, 2 minutes of oxygen left and the nearest station was 40 minutes away at .30 supercruise.

Faced with the reality of my first death and insurance claim I did the honourable thing, and self destructed. My first death, my first mission failure.

Empire rep is now red arrow down, I'll have some work to do before I go hunting Elite Anacondas again, and it won't be in a Viper. The Viper sounds absolutely incredible, far better than the Asp in my opinion, but I feel this ship would work better in a pack. Like a swarm of Hornets.

So, the Viper is sold, I almost have an A class Cobra MK III and I will return soon Jim Roth. Your days are numbered.
