So , after spending a fair amount of time setting up the joystick controlls and testing , i spent the rest of the afternoon flying around , doing a whole bunch of missions , got lost while exploring and then i died ! :D
Fortunatly i was still in the starter ship so no big loss there , i do have an Eagle stashed in station( pre order bonus) but i'm saving that for now .
All in all , i enjoyed the game quite a bit and look forward to some tard on tard action ;) .

I'll have to hook up with you fine folks on the weekend so you can tell me what to do lol.

BTW, flying with mouse and keyboard is really tough. Is it better for me to hook up my Joystick?

Shilka - get well soon buddy.

D.O.A. - How are you getting on with it so far?

Duke - Absolutely, a joystick is a must imo... So much better. Mouse and Keyboard is a recipe for frustration!

Set up these things to be on your joystick (if you have enough buttons) as a minimum

Roll/Yaw/Pitch/Throttle on axes (obviously).

Thrusters (8 way) on hat switch.

On 3 buttons on left of stick I have;

Free flight on (hold)
Select target in front of you
All stop (0%throttle)

On 3 buttons on right I have;

Frameshift drive / Supercruise (combined) activate
Deploy Landing Gear
Deploy Cargo Scoop

On buttons near hat at top I have;

Hat switch
Select last target (hostile)
Select next target (hostile)
Primary fire
Secondary fire
Deploy hardpoints
Boost engines

Those things there are enough to get you going and you can navigate through your ships menus using the joystick then.

I just press 1,2,3,4 etc. to access the relevant menu whilst in flight.

Hope that helps buds

Its going ok , been working on my standings for the federation , slow going .
Sold my eagle to boost my finances and so i could fit a heat vent thingy .
Tried a combat mission just now , no idea how to find the target though .
Also had a look at the Voice Attack program so i can give vocal orders to my ship , havent tried it yet though .

Ps : P , did you allready know about the hud colour customization ?
I'm sporting a nice Razer Green hud :p .

Sorry buds I'm playing supcom tonight... Tomorrow I'm out so might have to be next weekend or a weeknight. Christmas coming up though and kids off school so my gaming time will be limited until 2015!

There are new GeForce drivers out especially optimized for Elite: Dangerous, v 347.09
Made some settings default to higher settings for me.

This game is stunning already so I can't imagine it looking even better.

I just cannot believe the sheer size of space and how infinite it feels especially when flying around asteroid fields, amazing!

Space Games really aren't my thing but this one is just so well done you can't help but like it.

Updated the drivers, it seems to be running better for me too :)

I agree Duke, there's just something about this game, I love it.

Just stumbled across a wedding barge being escorted by two Cobras at a USS, love the randomness of it sometimes lol

Just fitted my Eagle with a Kill Warrant Scanner, it's making a difference to my Bounty Hunting already...

I've based myself at the Littlewood Terminal in V1688 Aquilae System, not far from Shilka at the Eravate system. What's your commander name Duke so we can add you to the group? :)

I'm anxiously awaiting for Limit Theory. After playing Eve:Online on and off for about ten years, I can't do MMOs anymore, they suck the life right out of you. Much prefer single player RPGs, even if it may not have the same gameplay. The Elder Scrolls Series, The Fallout Series, etc are more my style.

Well Daunt, this is far from being a full fledged mmo. We all play most of the times in the privat group and everybody does his things at his own pace.

There's also no real group content at the moment and sometimes even though we're all in the same system we can't all see each other either :-(

I'm an exploring bounty hunter and carrying a bounty on my own head vs the federation at the moment, based on a pirate base in Kini (also not far away from where everybody else is).

Yeah I would definitely not class it as an MMO...

It has been getting great reviews, and by great I mean the actual reviews themselves are very well written. The scores are fantastic too which I'm pleased about as Elite is about as unique experience you can get these days and it seems the reviewers get that.

For example: http://www.pcgamer.com/elite-dangerous-review/

Still a lot more to come from this title and I for one can't wait to see how it all pans out :)

I'd call this an RPG rather than an MMO although it is massive as far as I can tell. Maybe it's better classed an MRPG lol.

BTW, I finished most of the tuts now, have my controller mapped to the basics as well as Track IR roughly configured but for the life of me I have no idea what to do next?

Also, has anyone figured out how to map pedals (such as the G27) to the Yaw Control? I've tried combining pedals as one axis in my Logitech Profiler and cranking sensitivity however there is a massive deadzone in my pedals no matter what I do.

It's the same issue you have when you assign individual Left/Right, Up/Down rather than just assigning one axis for both movements.

Right now I'm forced to use my joystick for Yaw but I'd much rather use my pedals if possible.

Not sure about the yaw thing buds, I use the Yaw on my X-52 pro and it works fine for me :)

I really need some kind of head tracking, I'm holding out for the rift but there is a homebrew version of tracking they do on the forums that I might pick up to get me by until the release of OR.

As for what to do now, this is the essence of Elite. You can do whatever you like!

I have tried a bit of everything so far, looking to see what I enjoy most and run with roleplaying that for a while. So I've ended up being an explorer / bounty hunter. I just arrived at Sol, I set off from Erevate which is some distance away, exploring systems along the way. Netted myself a few bounties along the way ( I have a Kill Warrant Scanner as well as a basic discovery scanner), and I had to run away from a fair few fights too as things took unexpected turns. There's just too much to write here of what has happened, suffice to say it has been awesome and totally immersive. I started off playing my own tunes but I've stopped doing that now as it kind of killed the immersion for me. The in game music is so relaxing too.

My biggest piece of advice I can give (from my own experience) is don't try and make credits in this game. Just roleplay it, enjoy it, take your time and soak it all in. Turn orbit lines off, hell turn the whole hud off sometimes just to really get that feeling of it being you vs the galaxy. Take some missions, explore, trade, mine, hunt, do whatever you feel like. There is so much in this game already I could play it for a lifetime and not even scratch the surface. With more game mechanics on the way and it's continual development this is one of those games that will be talked about for years and years, much like it's predecessors.

As soon as I stopped worrying about getting a bigger ship, or the best "stuff" I started enjoying this game so much more :)

When the wings functionality is released this will be quite something to experience together as a group, but for now just go explore and write your own story. Oh, and don't forget to tell us when something cool happens ;)

Oh well I'm starting to get used to using the twist on my joystick but I really want to get the pedals working sometime in the future.

I've already done a few missions so far, made some mistakes, died once lol to my own stupidity.

I didn't realize that when ever you jump to a new system it always puts you next to that systems sun. No problem but I thought I'd see how close in I could get and noticed quite quickly that your temperatures rise to dangerous levels very quickly.

I turned out of it and started to panic because sparks were flying and I was being notified that I was taking hull damage so I tried to warp (or whatever it is) out of trouble.

Unbeknownst to me that process raises heat dramatically and when combined with a sun, it's too much. I lost the cockpit glass and shortly thereafter I lost my life.

I've done a few 500'ish credit missions where I'm not moving cargo, I'm moving intel or some other message.

It's been pretty fun but I did get interjected, interceded, intercopulated or whatever it is. That was about 30 seconds of sheer panic but I managed to keep the reticle in the dodging window and get out of it.

Warp speed ahead and I was a memory lol.

...safe but shaken.

BTW, Track IR is the bomb in this game. I just don't know how you could play without it?

Incidentally little P, I've adjusted some settings but I find the immersion to be just perfect. I have turned down the ingame music to barely audible though and that is actually a good thing.

Also Supercruise is the most awesome sounding experience ever!!!

hehehe great post :icon_lol:

Yes the lore/theory behind the jumps is that the ships nav computer will lock on to the largest object in the system as that is how wormholes work (evidently).

They are looking at a system in the future where you can choose which star to jump to in a binary system (or more) which would be cool. Once you get a fuel scoop and go exploring you will really see the benefit of jumping into a system close to the star though ;)

Some of the stars I've seen have been jaw dropping, once you get out there and explore the variety is great, and visually a real treat.

I will never forget the first time I jumped into a binary system with two stars close together - incredible.

Well done on escaping your interdiction ("intercopulated" - lol'ed) and as soon as you can start upgrading your sidey or save up for a eagle/hauler by doing some drop off missions. Might be worth upgrading your cargo hold so you can take more of these missions. Make sure you use your discovery scanner as it all adds up over time (just remember you need to be at least 20 light years away from the system you scanned to sell the data). Don't bother scanning asteroid belts, they don't give you any credits (p's top tip), whearas earth like worlds will give you the most. If you need help on the exploration mechanic just ask, it took me a little while to figure it out :)

I'm currently docked at Galileo station which is orbiting the Moon. They really bumped up the visuals for the planets in our system since gamma even. Jupiter now looks absolutely incredible. My kid wanted to do a tour of our solar system so at his request we went to Jupiter. He then asked if we could fly between the rings and the gas giant itself. Of course I said, no problem!

I then spent ten minutes trying to escape the gravity well we got caught in -.-

Jupiter looked incredible though, just for a fleeting second we both believed we were actually there, what more can you ask for from a game like this :)

Next step after exploring our solar system a bit more is to go to a nice system I found that used to be the base of the Federation Navy. It has a lot of systems around it that look good for a potential trade route, with the benefit of some high tech suppliers so I should have no problem outfitting a hauler or (hopefully) a Cobra eventually. Bit of a way off a Cobra still but I'm certainly in no rush.

/captains log.

note to self - I need more toilet paper

I've been doing good myself being the honest trader. Started off doing lawfull trade missions and got myself a hauler, then did a whole bunch more to get it fully upgraded. After that I did a total of 1500 lightyears of trips hauling rare trade goods, and ended up with enough credits to buy myself a 1 million Lacon type 6 trader, upgraded it to 100 cargo space and then did some regular trading, and increasingly valuable missions for the same faction to get upgrades and another million in the bank. Still working on getting it fully upgraded, which will take another 4 million or so, and then it's adventure time, which I will interlude with more missions for that same faction to get a good discount in the Eravate system whenever I need it (for upgrading to a lacon type 7 and eventually a lacon type 9. It's good fun, and hadn't it been for my poor health lately I'd be further already.

I absolutely love the diversity in activities available, and the fact that I actually am able to get somewhere as a trader too without having to be a gun pounding criminal. But whatever floats your boat, have fun with it! Hope to be in a position soon where I can drop half a million in cargo for those of you having cashflow problems to help out (or in return of some protection when the whole group travel stuff will be fleshed out).
