The learning curve is not too bad, for a good impression, check out the user manual or the video tutorial series. Also, the game comes with some short tutorial missions where you can fool around a bit, and which are good for setting up your controls.

I played the first months with keyboard and mouse, and it's very much doable, especially if you set the controls to return to neutral when you stop moving the mouse, and I actually find it more precise then joystick, so I still find that landing for example is easier with mouse/keyboard.

However, I'm primarily a trader, if you want to concentrate more on the pew pew side of things, I'd advise a joystick, which is much more suitable for prolongued turning and twisting. The €50 hotas I bought more then suffices to play the game, so really a joystick doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg would you want one. It's either that, or learn to fly with mouse in a different way, where you need to move your mouse back to where you started to stop movement in a certain direction, which I found to be quite difficult.

The loss at death isn't too big, basicly you have insurance on your ship, so you only need to make sure you have 5% of the value of your ship in the bank to pay the own risk part of the insurance. The larger the ships the more that 5% will cost of course, also, repaircost on the larger/largest ships will rise significantly. Usually dying as a trader will be the most costly, as the value of your cargo in medium ships onwards can easily surpass the 1,000,000 credits. On the other hand trading is the easiest way of moneymaking atm, so most traders with medium ships can afford to lose amounts of credits like that.

Hope that explains a bit :)

My (limited) experience so far is just as you said. The tutorial missions where you can just practice flying, docking and everything else is a big help. I spend a couple hours last night just seeing how well I could do docking.

I'm managing with my keyboard/mouse for now and I'm probably still going to try out the Xbox controller- or maybe jump right to a joystick. The problem now is that I still don't know the controls well enough to be able to re-bind them to my liking.

It takes a little while before it becomes second nature. But it will, and when you are flicking around the menus and changing fire groups on the fly while dropping chaff and boosting your shields with a cell and targeting their frame shift drive sub system with your gimballed beam lasers (all at the same time) it is so very worth it :)

Just take it slow, don't try and master everything in a rush and it will be an enjoyable learning curve :)

Tutorials first is a must really, and you might want to start off in solo mode or at least in our private group until you get used to the game mechanics.

In private groups you will be playing in the same galaxy as everyone else, with all the dynamic markets and events etc. it's just there's no chance of getting ganked at a starter station by some pimped up Anaconda pilot with a mean streak ;) The only human commanders you will see will be us... who will help rather than hinder :D

Oh yes, friendly fire confirmed after accidentally hitting a police viper...

Pro tip - don't do that, the response is... swift

Depends where you are... is the short answer.

Also, depends if the tm had "report crimes against me" switched on.

If you are in Anarchy Space it's game on, think of it as the wild west, without the sheriff or the marshals.

I personally have "report crimes against me" turned off (option found in the panel to the right of your ship cockpit under "functions") as now I have a decent enough ship to defend myself against pirates and bounty hunters I don't want the fuzz showing up and getting caught by a stray multicannon round...

If you are in a policed area of space and the other pilot is not "wanted" expect a visit from plod in ships you really don't want to be visited by ;)

So, I found some sweet illicit cargo and sold it for 9k, while incurring a 12k fine, so I'm well on my way to millionaire!

That's what stopped me from playing so far...too expensive. Looks like a great game...i wished they had a demo.

Sounds interesting. Had a look at the official page, but boy, 60 euro for beta access seems a bit steep, especially with the preorder of final being 40 euro's... I guess I got spoiled by thinking early access would be cheaper then final, not 50% more expensive...

So i just watched the docking tutorial...... i am going to crash and be fined a lot for the first few weeks of playing.

I find myself wishing docking was a bit harder. I don't really like how it grabs you for the last bit, I'd rather put it down on al fours (or threes) myself :)

Keep in mind the docking computer isn't perfect either, you'll always have to keep a watchfull eye ;)

If you want docking to be more difficult - either remove shields or disable shield module before entering station...

You have to be really careful landing without shields to not take any damage... I do it for the added challenge :)

As for the docking computer, it is being patched in 1.1 because at the moment it's like handing over the controls to a deaf and blind lemming... lol

Yeah, no sheilds and the Type 7 = a heavy repair bill. But I like the docking computer, it plays music.
