iRacing Practice Pals in 2016

As of Feb 15, 2016, the Practice Pals schedule is as follows:

  • Monday night commencing 8 PM EST
  • Wednesday night commencing 8 PM EST
  • Friday night commencing 7:30 PM EST (League)
Practice Pals for iRacing will see some changes in 2016 that I believe will help bring more people into the fold while also helping to fill the grid in our Blancpain Sprint League.

Firstly, I'll be adding numerical values to each and every Official Practice Pals Session. For example, Monday January 1, 2016 will be considered Practice Pals 1 with Tuesday being 2 and Fridays being 3.

This is 3 Official Practice Pals Sessions/week or about 156 Official Practice Pals Sessions annually.

Initially the numbering system was just to satisfy my curiosity over how many we've run but in actuality it can be used for much more. As an example, we can use it as a growth metric to monitor the ebb and flow of Drivers entering/leaving the program. This can help us a great deal in understanding what attracts Drivers and what doesn't.

League will also be considered an Official Practice Pal event as it only makes sense to funnel Drivers down this path. There is simply no point in running Practice Pals Sessions without there being some end goal toward the end of the week, League being that goal.

Plus it makes Practice Pals and our League synonymous which means over time our advertising is more effective without additional effort.

We'll also need to make a concerted effort to bring structure back to Practice Pals. As of late we've been Pitting Out whenever we Pit Out and it doesn't work in its current format.

The best racing has always been inverse Pit Out as everyone gets to experience traffic. We've gotten away from this format and I'd love it if we can bring it back.

It's just so much more entertaining to watch and always equates to more comms chatter as well. When we were doing this regularly we were attracting 30 - 40 viewers/session; now it's hard to maintain 15 viewers.

The more viewers we have the more chance we have of bringing people in which is always the end goal.

...and while on the vein of viewership, I'd like to try and cross promote streams a bit more this year.

At the same time I'd like to see if it's possible to embed multiple streams locally (on our website) to get people into the Community.

I've found a plugin for Wordpress that allows for embedding Twitch Streams virtually anywhere: https://wordpress.org/plugins/twitch-tv-embed-suite/

All around it we can run whatever styling, announcements or links to articles we want so this could represent a huge boost in onsite traffic.

I'll be adding a repeatable time-frame to all events as I want it as part of my Stream Program at Band of Others Twitch. Right now I'm leaning toward a time window of 3 hours per night Monday, Tuesday with Friday being about 5 hours in length.

The time frame EST is currently proposed to be 8PM to 11PM nightly, you all will have to let me know if this works.

Lastly, I'm currently mocking up League specific liveries for Band of Others/Practice Pals.

They carry the following side logo instead of Red B2O along with other changes in striping:

Most of all in 2016 I just want us to focus on taking this excellent program to the next level and explore all it's possibilities. It's brought some truly great people, memorable moments and side splitting humor so it only makes sense to take it to the next level.

First Monday of the new year!

So are we thinking GT3 @ Circuit Gillas Villinou-Avai?

Alternatively, GT1 is @ Mosport..

Alternatively alternatively, Indycar DW12 is @ Zolder (the "Z.." one with the tight chicanes)..

Not sure if I can make it late tonight but Gilles-Villeneuve is a great track. Mosport is also awesome but maybe it wouldn't be bad to get some league practice in for the first race on Friday.

Does everything start at 8pm or just the league race? For some reason I'm thinking practice pals starts at 7pm but I can't quite remember (EST)

And how long can we expect practices and races to last? Including practice and race for races.

Need to know because I'm trying to put together a schedule to keep track of which SOF races I can run.

Usually, for our friday league, we race at 10pm eastern. The quali race is just before that. We usually put up a session for 2 hours starting at 8pm, which is 1hr 40min of practice, then the quali race. Then another hour after (starting at 10) for the actual race.

As of Feb 15, 2016, official Practice Pals Sessions will be held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8 PM EST, 8 PM EST and 7:30 PM EST respectively.

I'm hoping this change will work better with some of our Oval guys and also break up the monotony of running back to back nightly sessions.

Original post has been updated to reflect this schedule change.

Yeah Phillip Island, can't wait!

I'm going to try and stick with the BMW but my guess is it will be painfully slow this week.

BMW slow at Phillip Island? What makes you say that :O? I'm pretty sure it's one of the fastest around there with the McLaren being able to make maybe 4 or 5 out of the 12 corners due to understeer :p.

The BMW was the fastest car at Phillip Island for the first few Seasons but I don't think it's like that anymore. There is a lot of straight at Phillip Island and the BMW isn't terribly good at speed.

We're going to have to run very minimal wing which makes the car very treacherous around here.

The McLaren is lucky in this regard because you can slower in to help with the understeer but my guess is oversteer is going to be the BMW's main problem. Not to mention how much quicker the McLaren and Ford are out of every single corner.

At Zolder anyway I could hear both you and Davey on throttle before I could get the car settled enough to gun it. The best I could do is maintain corner speed and try to roll through quicker while feathering throttle until settled.

I guess we'll see how it goes tonight.

PI's highspeed T1 and decreasing ratio T2 should help BMW, but straighter areas might favour others too much. I can't remember racing GT3 here.

I raced it when it was severely OP here but now it's certainly much more inline. I've managed to run 2 full fuel runs in it to this point so it's manageable but a bit scary at times lol.
