Oculus Rift

You think it has to do with the resolution? I'll buy it off you! My Arcade Simpit NEEDS Oculus so bad.
Yea that is part of it I think. I noticed finding breaking points in iracing was difficult on some tracks. But it really gave you a sense of speed and size in the game.

I would sell it, I was thinking of seeing what I could get for it now that the CV1 is out at it's current price.

I had a DK2 too. The resolution and Hz isn't there in the DK2, but it was only meant to be a development kit after all, not for consumers.

I sold it on at what I paid for it knowing full well the consumer release was going to be epic.

If you haven't tried a rift, it is seriously impressive and worth every penny. Whatever they charge. I can't wait for it to be delivered, and the Oculus touch controllers to be released later in the year.

It's hard to describe what being in the rift is like, other than unbelievable. Until your brain adjusts, believes it, and you're in. Then the only word to describe it is... incredible.

Something is worth what people are willing to pay for it. It's as simple as that. Plenty of people will pay that AND more for the experience. Plenty won't, and I don't think they care. They aren't pitching for every household to have a rift like the cheap consoles or steam machines.

I need to upgrade my processor too, and get a PCI-E express USB 3.0 card, the i7 2700K doesn't cut it. It's going to be expensive, but like I said it's worth what people are willing to pay for!

And it's worse for Brits, just the Rift itself is £499 which is $730 and then we have shipping and import tax to pay on top. All in it's going to cost around £550 which is $804. Never mind the pc upgrade costs.

Wait... that is ridiculous actually

Of course it comes down to what people are willing to pay. I know for a fact tons of people were ready and willing to pay the 350-400 that it was said to cost only a few months ago, only to hesitate. (myself included)

I'll wait until it comes down, either because a newer version got released, or competition forces it down, or they don't bundle it with other crap. Or I'll buy your used one Li-uhl P, because I know you'll use it for ten minutes.

Unfortunately I just spent $750 on a monitor, I could justify the rift for ~$400 but at $600 it's a bit much for me.

Rift is a great idea. Many people say glasses work with the Rift. However, I've had no luck and so have several friends when trialing. Test one before ordering if you wear them.. seriously. It doesn't work for all.

A lot of sites and people at CES are saying the HTC Vive is a very impressive product too. It has more of a screen door effect (akin to the DK2 which was very noticeable for me) but a higher field of view and of course you can move around a large room, with a front facing camera able to alert you when you are about to walk into something, whereas with the Rift you are limited to a small space but the actual optics are superior. Of course both are tethered so the ability to walk around a large room with the Vive brings up the problem of tripping over the tether.

For me, I'm going to wait to see how the chips fall. Once the products are released I'll go along to a store demo and make an informed choice then.

One thing for sure is that it's going to be interesting to see how it all plays out, and with both the lead companies indicating they are shooting for wireless solutions to VR it's an exciting time for gaming.

I was really excited by the prospect of VR having owned the DK2 and experiencing what it can do even in that state. I was ready to hand over the money for the Rift on release but the HTC Vive with it's partnership with Valve and the steam integration has convinced me to put the brakes on and wait to see how they both are once released.

Regarding the price, I really think it's a non-issue as people spend more than the price of a Rift on a gaming monitor, or a TV. When you put it into perspective and actually consider how much more VR can give you for the same price as a decent monitor or a half decent TV, it's not bad at all. My GPU cost more than the Rift. For everything that VR can offer I think the price is justified completely.

To be honest, I don't think it's way off price. I'm more pissed at what they told us to expect, and then didn't even correct it but rather just said OK ORDER! and bam it was no where near the expectation. They knew people would be pissed and decided not to release any details beforehand.

I don't care much about being able to walk around or wireless. Actually I'd probably prefer to remain wired. All the games I'd play would for the most part do not involve moving (iRacing, Elite, Falcon, etc) and suit my arcade pit perfectly.

Well, at least he held his hands up and apologized. You don't get that much these days. He also explained himself, rather than make excuses, and for that I tip my hat. Especially doing it head on at Reddit where he knew he would be facing both barrels.

Personally I think they are doing the right thing, to get the whole VR thing rolling. Releasing a half ass product with cheaper components could have been done, but with an almost certain guarantee that VR would not take hold, much like 3D in gaming.

They needed to make the best Rift they could, and not make a profit on it (enabled by the huge money injection from Facebook), unlike Sony who can make a loss on their product as they know they will make it back in software. This has long been Sony's strategy. Oculus can't afford to do that and have made the best VR experience available with the tech we have today, and have priced it accordingly. I can't wait to see how it all pans out :)

I am looking forward to the wireless version too, I don't like wires at all (hate it in fact) but understand we aren't quite there with VR. It will come though so I'm happy to wait.

You're correct on doing it right. It's the difference between the half-ass VR headsets we've seen for the past two decades, a crappy gimmick, and a revolution in the gaming industry.
