I've been playing it some and honestly...I'm just not finding it to be all that fun. I haven't found many populated "Classic Mode" servers, so I'm stuck playing "Realism Mode," which basically merges RO with BF.
The Americans have across the board better gear. If the Japanese win, it's usually because of positioning. For example, on Saipan, it seems that the Japanese can win because they hold better defensive positions and the US has a lot of ground to cover, but if the US gets anywhere into close combat, the Japanese are totally screwed. There doesn't seem to be any advantage of the Arisaka rifles over the Garands and M1 Carbines. And the flamethrower...good God...talk about playing in "easy mode."
And yet, when I play as the Americans, it seems like we're frequently screwed because of positioning. The Japanese potentially have the drop on us quite easily.
And, of course, the IDIOTIC fucking "upgrade" system where your avatar actually gets better at things as he levels remains. Let me be clear: this is one of the DUMBEST fucking systems in ANY game. Player skill, and player skill alone should determine how well the avatar performs. the notion that someone has better resistance to suppression, can reload faster, can bring iron sights up faster, etc. all because they've been playing longer?
FUCK. THAT.
I guess I just miss RO:Ost. That game was so much better. The maps were designed better, the team weapon loadouts worked better, there were no stupid unlocks and there was no fucking avatar improvement.
I mean, I'm glad I got the game for, oh, $10, and for that price, it's fine to screw around with once in a while, but I just can't consider the game a serious game anymore. I doubt I'll be buying another Tripwire product, given how they handled RO2 and RS. I just don't trust their design judgment anymore.
