Can someone explain to me what makes Rust so special? It seems cool and I'm interested but I'm having a hard time seeing what makes it so special / different.

Perhaps I'm not the right person to answer this question, as I bought the game being quite sceptical.

To be honest, its a game like so many other survival games out there. What's positive about it imho it has a good crafting system, gathering raw materials takes effort, but is not overly grindy, and the building system is very nice. Also, for an early access it has pretty good performance where many other realistic looking survival games suffer from horrible FPS/lag/etc during early access.

Downside is, as many claim, the 'toxic community' (check the steam reviews for a more in depth explaination). On PvP servers there is a lot of hacking and a lot of griefing going on, where people will destroy your little home or make it unuseable, not to steal your stuff (which would make sense), but just to be A-holes, and 'KillOnSight' is the standard, so you'll have a hard time as a loner to find someone to work together with, as most will eather kill you right away, or will act friendly and shoot you in the back of the head as soon as you turn around.

There's non of the downsides on our own whitelisted server of course for appearant reasons, but it remains to be seen if wildlife and the enemy heli alone are challenging enough to keep the game interesting in PvE mode, and in my opinion it doesn't feel dangerous enough with just PvE (eventhough I have died plenty of times by now). However PvP would probably scare me away from this game even sooner.

So in short, the game itself is good in my opinion, but a lot of your game experience depends on other players behaviour, and we all know how that can work out on public servers ;)

This is just my personal opinion though, people like Kitlope who have played this game for many more hours then I have might have a different story to tell you...

Nothing makes it special, nothing makes it all that different.

It has bits of things we've seen from many other titles before it blended in their own special recipe.

To be honest it's no different than being bored out of your skull as a little kid at home unless you use your imagination to have fun in it. Last night Joe, Zac and myself went on a hunting party with crossbows only and that was a lot of fun.

We had a particularly funny moment when I drew agro from a bear and it ran at Zac instead lol.

I also had a moment where I was in my Inventory screen and was attacked from behind by another bear. He took me down to 3 health and I was running backward emptying a clip into his face.

That hunting party was a blast and just one of I'm sure several ways to be creative ingame. As Shilka said there is a very good building system and decent crafting system as well.

I do wish it was a lot more dangerous in PVE but it is what it is.

The one thing it does have though is it's a very social game. It's a lot of fun to play with friends and at times takes me back to DayZ Mod in terms of sharing and helping each other out.

Thought I would add a little to this thread now that I have more time since I'm back at home although hopefully Ft. McMurray beckons soon so we can finish up that job.

I love Rust. I mean, I fucking love it. I don't think I have liked a game so much since Bf1942 days. I think of it as just a big mind fuck, a psychological 1970's thriller back when dialog actually made the movie. I play on a relative low pop vanilla server (yes, be prepared to farm) that usually has 5 - 35 players on it depending on time of day, alliances are made, broken, friends and enemies. Lies, half truth and rumours abound. Seriously, Garry should have named the game "hypocrisy", because that is 90% of Rust players. I spent many hours playing relatively solo and being in good with a few regulars but this month met quite a few like minded individuals, we're pretty much the Sheriff's and help nakeds and just build. The raiding groups tend to get snuffed out by us but hey you always need an antagonist or things can become a bit stale so there's always some baddies that disagree with our good intentions. Within the mostly slower times of crafting, farming or drawing some quality artwork the adrenaline can really get going when a gun battle breaks out or a small raid occurs to your base. I've literally had my heart pounding, hand shaking on the trackball as rockets are blowing up walls around me. It's unreal and also unsettling knowing all your hard work is being compromised. So that's when you shoot back. And get your buddies to help. Just wow.

Being a work in progress and the excellent communication & devblog/Community News by Garry and Co. is the icing on the cake. Watching the game grow and become a little more interesting every week is awesome, I love Thursdays now due to the updates. Always something to look forward to. As an audio fanatic, the games sound's are killer. Great ambience noise and some wicked dynamic range. I've jumped 3 feet off my chair more than once while farming some stone listening to the crows and bushes when from 100 feet away the crack of a Bolty sends you scurrying for cover. Scares the fuck right out of me.

Anyhoo, just love the game. So many different ways to play it, so many play styles and some serious comedy can occur. Good times
