Sebring, the track that continues to defy me.
It was an honor to drive with
@Skid_Marc_ and
@Anson Bennette who showed utter class and resilience given our start.
I put in a pretty terrible Qualify effort gridding us dead last or close to it. Even though I did my best to remain clean, there were issues resulting in aero damage initially followed by suspension damage on the second incident.
Even the benefit of hindsight doesn't do much to gain clarity into what actually happened as I'd likely do the same thing again. I just never expected a car inside on the narrow exit I take at Sunset Bend. I also thought I waited patiently enough to get through the extended incidents at Turn 8 exit carrying through Turn 9 but nope, brushed the front of a Mercedes facing me and spent 13 minutes in the Pits for my trouble.
I was pretty gutted when this happened and as usual my Team was supportive.
Given my goal of not putting a scratch on the car was clearly out of reach I decided to drive like a bat out of hell on my next stints.
Come what may.
Fortunately the race started coming to us and with twilight hours approaching, the track felt just right to go for it. I can honestly say these 2 stints are the hardest I've ever raced in an Endurance Event and felt completely at ease in doing so.
I've no idea why and I'm dying to figure it out?
@Skid_Marc_ got in the car for the final 3 stints and did a great job saving fuel. This, combined with a little luck, meant we could be racing for a potential 7th place with 8th all but locked up.
Then with the final stint left to go prior to checkers, disaster struck.
You know that little bump in the Pit Wall that is in the perfect spot to reach out and grab you as you try to setup for T1, that ALL of us have hit? Well, it took another victim that night ripping the right rear tire from our Audi.
The repairs required were longer than it takes to replace an engine so we finish the Race in the Pits.
...for me, this being the second time.
Similarities in both 12hrs are striking for me. We had a strong car but due to misfortune end up laps down in the early stages. We persevere and just as it's looking as if a strong finish is near, Sebring reminds you it's not over until it's over.
Over being a variable, never a constant.
History repeating itself.
I'll get you next year Sebring and if not next year then the year after. There is no way you'll be allowed to continue as victor, eventually my combined stubbornness and denial WILL wear you down!
