I've never liked the way the Beamer looks, and more importantly I've HATED how it sounds, but I can't argue with how it drives. It's a very stable car that I've enjoyed driving. Not as fun as the Macca but still, it's reliable and I really like that about it. Now the M6 is a different story...

it's a toss up between the BMW and the Ruf for worst sounding car. Even the Skippy sounds better in car.

Too true. I actually didn't want to drive the BMW but shortly after release it was running Phillip Island which we all know to be one of my favorite tracks.

I swore up and down I would not purchase the BMW but after 2 days in Practice Pals Sessions I was still a full second slower than the average guy in the Ruf and McLaren.

I grudingly picked the car up and was well over 1 second/lap faster, close to 1.5 and that was in my first 5 laps.

If you guys remember the early days of BMW, it was BMW Challenge not GT3 Challenge. The car was so OP nobody drove anything else.

Now it's been nerfed to oblivion so few drive it except on more technical tracks due to it's straight line speed. A very large part of me wonders if the Audi will be setup similar as it too suffers from straight line speed comparatively in Blacpain.

BMW isn't that nerfed. People overexaggerate the differences. If you put drivers that can get everything out of each car, difference is 0.3 at best. Anything more and it's the driver. No setup will make you magically faster either.

OK so let me get this straight because your comment is truly fascinating to me.

So I get in a car at Phillip Island, a track I'm very confident at and have turned hundreds of laps at. I know the line pretty well and am reasonably competitive there.

I start off in a 2 hour practice session and I'm turning reasonably competitive, controlled laps.

...but, I'm not in the Top 10 of this Server so I make a series of setup changes improving laptimes by 2+ seconds/lap.

So I'm curious, how is it that no setup makes me magically faster because it seems to me that every setup makes me magically faster.

Setup make the driver more comfortable to drive it closer to the edge. Changes you are making are physically impossible to make a car drive that much faster, even on a track like Monza where every little change might affect its top speed. Duke, I have been saying this for a while now as it comes from drivers much faster, better and more knowledgable than me. That initial 2 second gain goes away pretty quick? I can bet it's not after every single lap you do in practice.

Seeing as I might sounds like a crazy person talking, ask Reinaldo or some other alien from your stream. I've learned from them. When I was still mostly in FGT3, Reinaldo and Nathan Schartner were go-to guys I went for setups. They're as fast as I'll never be, yet I drive the same setup, why? Similar styles which means setup fits us better and we're both comfortable to push the car harder, but I hit that limit before they do, because they are simply better.

It would be the same as saying that if I get a DD wheel, it'll instantly make me faster, yet I know it won't. G27 I have is sufficiently precise for my skill set.

Oval on other hand is about optimizing 4 same corners over and over again, which is a whole another story and not related.

I have to hand it to you Dino because that is by far the most articulate response you've given to date on this topic (heh).

You lost me a bit with the wheel reference however because that's not what we're discussing, I'm not even sure how you drew that comparison to be honest? You're talking about replacing something with something else, this is not the discussion we're having.

What I originally stated was that I was instantly well over 1 second/lap faster in the BMW than I was in the other 2 cars tested.

That is either OP or I managed to find a setup that allowed the car to feel better for me if you want to argue semantics. Either way, 2 days of testing 2 cars and a second/lap faster in a brand new car is substantial.

Saying the car hasn't been nerfed that much is a bit silly given that's all anyone was driving that first season but of course you're welcome to your opinion.

It sounds perfectly reasonable to me that setup changes make the Driver faster in a car but our discussions have rarely gone there either. Our discussions have almost always revolved around my refusal to run anything other than fixed setups in League.

I have no problem bowing to the car not being faster due to setup given your response however, a good Driver who understands said car and how to make it faster in his hands could equate to imbalance.

That has always been my point of contention of fixed vs open and it's equated to some really close racing.

I don't "articulate" without a good reason ;)

In regards to fixed vs open, I've made my observation and opinion regarding that, you're replied and that was last I've said anything except that I won't run it. Even if I wanted to, I can't as I don't have time because of school. I barely find time to run a league every 2 weeks as is.

If you took that same driver that you're racing with closely, you will 99% race him closely in open setup too, unless the setups you're driving fit very well with one driver and not at all with another, which will make one more comfortable and other not so much (which is why I do not like baseline, not my style of driving required by it). I could even argue fixed is actually worse as it benefits some drivers, while detrimental to others, which is where open comes in where setup will make every driver comfortable. If a wheel analogy doesn't explain that, I am not sure how else I can explain it to you.

Maybe this helps: I drive HPD as much as I can as I actually enjoy driving the car because it is so different, high downforce at speed, very little mechanical grip at low speed, requiring very fine/precise handling, all of which varies vastly between drivers with same results. That is why I can take a setup from John Ulmer and race him at Mosport, but if I take Allan Patterson's, I'll understeer into a wall, while Allan will carry on battling with John. All 3 of us have very similar lap times in the end, when driving comfortable/suiting setups.

Ken, I don't think I can explain this to you anymore or force it on you to understand, but I encourage you to ask guys faster than me that you know (Reinaldo, Nathan Schartner, etc), they're the ones I've learned from.

Pretty much what I've already said time and time again actually.

Fixed is the only setup option that makes us all have to deal with the exact same issues. If some do better in this regard then there's nothing I can do about it but afaic it's the best way to somewhat level the playing field that I can think of.

Talking to Nathan, Reinaldo or whomever isn't going to change my mind in this regard, sorry.

I'm hoping that in moving Practice Pals to a Mon, Wed, Fri schedule I'll be able to race again. My problem has been good practices Monday followed by crap on Tuesday which drains what limited Driver confidence I have.

I don't know if I'll be able to race every Wednesday but I'm aiming for about half of them to start.

Anyone else have / going to buy Indianapolis for the Blancpain series? Is the road course worth it?

I did really like the track using the Bike configuration in the Skippy. GT3s at the Road course would probably be a different story, but it should still be a decent road track.
