Thought I would share some photos from my day at Mid Ohio yesterday for the IMSA race weekend. Few things to note....

1.) I have no "eye" for photography so if you are looking for amazing shots look elsewhere.
2.) These were taken with an iphone so quality is meh.
3.) Although I am no huge fan of the AMG in Iracing, IRL the car sounds great!
4.) Porsche GT3 Cup is fantastic to watch live in person.
5.) The Porsche RSR made some noises on track that were downright heavenly.
6.) GTLM Vettes are SUPER loud :)

Thanks for posting this link to the 24hr ring stream, that was awesome yo watch (and not just seeing the wheel flying off the Merc at the end of the pits in real-time) but also the added info provided on team strategy and just logistical stuff like not being abLe to pit two cars of the same team at the same time/lap count since they only have one box, the minimum pit times, brake rotor and pad replacements, 60k zones, darkness, cats n dogs level of rain and hail, etc. Etc. These guys and girls driving are BEASTS and we were pretty lucky / spoiled on not having to deal with any of that on the sim...

Is this why they have 180 cars? If they start with 60 there must be none left at the end :O. I thought it was indeed a pretty good race to watch. I watched/listened throughout the evening and most of the night and continued in the morning right before the red flag. Some of the highlights that stood out for me off the top of my head:
  • How slow the code 60s actually are and how fast the cars can get down to 60.
  • The Ferrari on fire during fueling in the pits and how well the crew handled it.
  • The very high speed Audi crash on Döttinger Höhe from Dries Vanthoor I believe after clipping a car in the kink.
  • The Porsche who got lucky with the timing of a green flag in a slow zone and was able to charge past a bunch of cars still doing 60.
  • The rain --twice-- and and the denial of it from the lead battle during the night.
  • The immense speed disparity between GT3s and slower classes, even when they can't see shit.
  • Kelvin van der Linde's oops, damaging the Audi and having to limp a long way back.
  • The Porsche who went grass-tracking nose first and had to pull over and get out 1-2 laps later to remove that grass as his engine started smoking from overheating.
  • The #4 Mercedes out-braking himself while racing the #912 into T1 and trying to get the lead back in T2. Instead he bumped into the Porsche and almost lost control.
  • The annual picnic, organized by the slower classes and GT3 leader at the end of Tiergarten at 23h59m50s into the race, because fuck doing another 10-minute lap in the rain.

I got to watch it off and on although didn't get to see the end since I was on a flight back home. Boy do you get a sense of how scary it must be to drive a GT3 car in the rain and dark with all of those slower classes. Just crazy!!!!!

This footage is sped up right? Right?! HOLY **** that is insane. This thing has to be close to or faster even than an F1 car surely?!

EDIT: Okay, did a little research, it IS faster than an F1 car, by 0.7 round Spa beating Hamilton's pole time. Mental.

Yeah, it's an absurdly fast car. Just goes to show the balance motorsport has to strike between safety, cost and all out engineering.

Imagine a motorsport series where the cars are drones, ie. piloted by remote access via a driver in a top spec simulator. Free from restrictions (within the bounds of spectator safety). I'm not sure I'd be a fan due to removing the human element from the car itself, but it would be interesting to see how far they could push things without the restrictions of established motorsport restrictions.
