So @Nejtun indicated he wanted to try a little air to air refueling for the first time so up we went. First in the Hornets.....

Hornet Refuel.jpg

Then we moved onto the A-10c......

A10c Refuel 2.jpg

A10c Refuel 3.jpg

Then @Jeeve79 decided to join us in his Mustang......

Unfortunately the flight ended with a bit of a bang, but everyone made it down safely :)

Needless to say, I forgot how freaking difficult it is to air to air refuel the Hog vs. the Hornet. I'm sure it wouldn't be so bad if I started practicing it again, but I couldn't do it today to save my life.

Little_P and I are going to do some WW2 stuff this evening , first up will be a shakedown on our normal server using Jeeves mission with ( mostly ) static vehicles :D

Then I will try to host a "Through the Inferno " WW2 dynamic mission on the Normandy map. Cant host this one on the server as It would mean purchasing another copy of the map !!! so it wilkl be hosted locally on my PC .

Please feel free to join ! we will be getting going about 8pm GMT (work out your own damn time zones for the rest lol )
no refreshments will be provided , so bring your own Tea, crumpets and bacon sandwiches. we have a couple of spare scarves and goggles if you forget to bring your own, what what!

Tonight was really fun thanks @Nejtun and @Jeeve79! I'll post some screenshots tomorrow, had an absolutely fantastic time flying with you both, I think Jeeve got a couple of screens too. I'm so glad you convinced me to get into DCS

@Brainling Nejtun's video was really helpful to me and a lot easier than sitting through the tutorial. I bloody love prop planes, they feel so alive, and no computers. Just you, an engine, gravity and aerodynamics... bliss.

it was a blast though matt, you missed me smashing into the runway (often) smashing into the enemy, smashing into... you get the idea. anyway !!! that was really a lot of fun guys, would love to get even more people into the sim, there is something there for everyone!

See I love the computers. I love working the avionics of a modern aircraft, using all the sensors to find and prosecute a target. Different strokes for different folks!
I have a new joy in the F18 thanks to matt (yeah, cheers like I didn't spend enough time on this already lol), so when all you top gunners get your F14's in March i think it is, we can speed around in the modern stuff too!

I think people are going to be disappointed with the F-14 once some time passes. Not because Heatblur won't do an amazing job, but because it's not nearly the monster people think it is against truly modern aircraft. I'll go 1v1 vs a Tomcat in a Hornet any day, and I'll win more often than not. Higher G-loading, fly by wire so I can really yank the jet around, AIM-9X + JHMCS. Even if we start in the BVR, his Phoenix's will miss because I'm a fighter and change aspect very quickly, and then when we merge I have all the advantages except raw power.

Oh definitely Brainling, that's what's great about DCS there is something for everyone. I love the jets and the props, it depends what mood I'm in as to what I want to use. I am loving the Spitfire because the only jets I have are the basic ones with the basic cockpit.

Once the F-14 comes out I'll have a clickable jet and my clickable Spitfire so I'll be happy. I like doing the PvE stuff so not worried about Hornets, the Tomcat is a much older platform anyway so it shouldn't win in a fight against a Hornet I guess. I'm looking forward to taking the F-14 up and taking on the enemy who will be using jets from the same era, and smashing them to tiny little pieces while singing Kenny Loggins and high fiving everywhere lol

Here's some screenshots from last night, I didn't get too many considering we were playing for 4.5 hours straight but I did get a few

Screen_181227_223659.jpg

I came in for my first landing and it went great, except I heard this awful scraping noise. Then I realised as I was coming to a stop... I hadn't put my landing gear down. Smooth landing considering though, the marks on the underside should buff out... oops

I got this one completely by accident but was surprised at the level of detail, incredible

Nejtun in his Mustang on the way to the objective, loved the shadow on the ocean in this one

Screen_181227_233520.jpg

Jeeve getting close to the Ocean, we wondered if there would be a trail in the water if he got close enough...

Screen_181227_233808.jpg

And the nutter actually got around a metre off the surface... trails confirmed

omg , the bullet casings!!!!! who knew ? :D really nice shots there P , its great to watch these from the outside, I was watching a track back after a mission I did earlier and the sounds and visuals of attacking things from various angles are insane !!

word of warning though, the playback tracks from DCS only log your plane as device inputs, so one lag spike and suddenly your plane is off course and could crash any time so the playback is whatever it wants to be.

This counts from the person recording the track only, all other aircraft in the sim at the time should do what they ought to do. SO, if you want to do a video featuring accurate external views its best to grab the server side track if available , or a track from someone who is idle on the ground

Yeah these were all live so I'm surprised they came out as well as they did, I can't wait to fly again actually... doing anything Sunday evening? @Wapwap has it now too so we could try and get @Jeeve79 and @ElektroVodka on to make it 5, or even more if anyone else wanted to join us Sunday evening...

If anyone is up for some flying this weekend I should be around. Need to play around with GLBU’s on the Hornet.

I think my machine will be up and ready to go to do some flying this weekend. In the process of doing The Reinstall to my new SSD now.

I can fly around in the A-10C and FAC-A for people who want to drop LGB's from the Hornet.

The main thing for me right now, @Brainling is that the hornet is still missing a lot of features / weapons etc while the tomcat will be pretty well rounded at alpha release.

I still think I would prefer the hornet but heat blur seems to have done such a nice job.

Besides if any f14 pilot decides to go toe to toe and not keep his distance, he's not smart. He shouldn't let you get close and has the ability to keep you from doing so.

The Hornet is pretty alright now. It's still missing two key things for me, ATFLIR and the HARM, but overall it's a usable platform now that can operate in medium threat environments if you're smart.

Sure, he can run away from me, that's fine, I win by default then. The Phoenix doesn't really scare me. An F-14 locks me up in lethal, I go defensive and watch his Phoenix not be able to burn the energy to get to me because I'm a fighter not a soviet era high altitude bomber. In AIM-120 range it comes down to pilot skill, and if it gets to the merge I have all the advantages except raw power. If I don't kill him in two turns, I may be in trouble, because he can out zoom me, but I have the much easier time getting the kill with the AIM-9X and JHMCS combined with my better turn rate and ability to push the jet to the edge without departing controlled flight.

I think the F-14 is gonna be rad, I just don't think it's going to be the "Hornet killer" so many people crow about it being. The main strength of the F-14, range, doesn't really factor in with DCS. Plus there is something to be said for being a single seater and having complete control of the aircraft versus trying to coordinate with a friend and/or an AI.
